March 2024 Updates

March 28, 2024

Dear Lion Families,

Congratulations to our varsity Marquettes for their outstanding performance this weekend at a National Competition. They competed against 65 other varsity squads from several different states and came home with nine National Championships and one Grand National championship in a variety of categories. Congratulations to the MHS Orchestra for their best showing at a UIL competition in the program’s history. MHS Orchestra came home with four superior ratings that led to them earning four sweepstakes trophies and a superior site-reading recognition. In the UIL One Act Play competition, our theater students received five awards including All Star Cast and Best Technician. Also, please wish us luck as we send five MHS HOSA students to the state-level HOSA competition next week.

Monday, April 8th Solar Eclipse Information

On April 8, 2024, MHS students will go outside with their 7th period teachers to view the totality of the solar eclipse. The district will provide the glasses required for viewing the eclipse safely. On that day, we WILL NOT go to 6th period. Students will report directly from 5th period (or lunch) to their 7th period class. The  campus will be closed to all visitors from 12:45 until 2:15. We ask that parents that pick-up students after school not arrive until after 2:15. This parking lot entrances from Graves and Wilson Creek will be closed during that time. Any seniors that have early release during 6th or 7th period must exit the building immediately following 5th period.

We will accept parent notes for students who stay home to view the event with their families, however, the absence will count toward the 90% attendance law. Students may opt out of viewing the eclipse while at school, but parent permission is required. If you would like to opt your student out of viewing the eclipse while at school please fill out our MHS Solar Eclipse Opt Out Form. Please be sure that this form is completed no later than 4 pm on April 4.

Dear Lion Families,

We were happy to see our Lions back from spring break! We hope they all were able to do something fun, or at least got some rest.

Third quarter grades are currently in HAC. If grades are not where they need to be, please reach out to your child’s teacher to get their most up-to-date tutorial times. Tutoring buses are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students must attend tutorials and get a tutoring bus pass from the teacher in order to ride the tutoring bus.

March 1, 2024

Dear Lion Families,

We want to congratulate our Art Department this week! This past Saturday at the Regional Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition at Emerson HS in Frisco, 84 of the 85 entries of MHS students medaled. For those of you that do not know much about VASE, having that many entries is amazing, and having nearly all of them medal is phenomenal! Thirteen of our students will advance to state competition. Kudos to all of our VASE competition winners and their teachers.

Join us to watch our theater troupe perform their One Act Play, Tartuffe, on Tuesday, March 5 at 6pm. Admission is free. We hope you will come out and support our students to prepare for their UIL competition.

Spring Break!

March 11 – March 18; Students do not return to school until TUESDAY, March 19.

MHS PTO NEEDS YOU!

The PTO operates the Roar Store at McKinney High. We provide healthy snack and drink options for the students. The store is run solely by volunteers, and all proceeds go directly back to MHS! We would appreciate your help to make it a success. We offer varying shift times to accommodate you. The Roar Store is a great place to support the school as well as see all the students! Visit the signup link below to volunteer at the MHS Roar Store and watch students smile! Here is the link for the Roar Store SignUp.

SAT School Day

This Wednesday, March 6, we will be administering the SAT to all juniors and any other students that signed up. Because this is a large testing event, students will be displaced from their normal classrooms. Signs will be posted to help with displacement and staff will be available to help.

Senior Updates

Seniors are allowed to purchase their school laptops if they choose to do so. On April 19, fees will be posted in HAC so you will know the price of the laptop. The purchase deadline is May 10. Laptops that are not purchased must be returned on May 16.

Campus safety: Students leaving campus and visitors

All high schools in MISD are CLOSED CAMPUSES, meaning that students are not allowed to come and go freely during the day. If a student needs to leave campus for ANY reason, they MUST go through our checkout process with their house office. Students that leave campus without permission will receive consequences.

School security is similar to airport security, we take it that seriously. At the airport, you cannot pass into the terminal area without showing a valid ID. School is no different. Anyone that visits our campus MUST show proper identification.
