1.5 million students take the test each year. 50,000 or about 3.3% of students will qualify to be National Merit Program. Of that 50,000 about 2/3 will be recognized as a Commended Scholar.

Of the 1.5 million students about 16,000 or 1% will be named National Merit Semifinalists. The Semifinalists apply for Finalists standing and about 90% of Semifinalists received Finalists standing. Once a students has been named a National Merit Finalist they will be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship program.
