MCKINNEY COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM

The McKinney High School Cosmetology Program encompasses the foundational principals necessary to acquire a license to practice, from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). We are a program regulated by both the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and TDLR.

By entering our program, students will have the ability to be creative and expand their knowledge and technical skills in hair cutting, styling, and coloring, chemistry, chemical texture, facials, make-up, hair removal, lashes, manicures, pedicures, and artificial nails. In addition, students will develop 21st century skills such as communication and social abilities, leadership and business skills, collaboration, and critical thinking. Students will participate in real life experiences, applying team building exercises, ethical situations, infection control disciplines, and customer service in our “Mane Street Salon” (We do not provide services for children under the age of twelve).

Cosmetology is a two year program with a mandatory 1000 clock hours (500 hours in the first year and 500 hours in the second year). When the student reaches 900 hours, they can apply, take, and pass the written portion of the state exam. The written portion is a requirement for graduation credit in second semester of the senior year. After completion of 1000 hours the student can apply to take the practical portion of the state exam. With a passing score and fee payment, the student will then receive their license.

Attendance is a key component for success in this program! It is imperative for students to be prompt and present every day. Before school and after school hours are strongly encouraged to receive all 1000 hours and gain clinical experience which is needed for smooth transition into the salon work force.

To apply to our program, click the link or scan the QR code to fill out the google form. Prepare for a formal interview which will happen during the selection process. The Cosmetology Instructor will contact you if you are accepted. Due to course requirements, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for interested students to transfer to MHS. Please see your campus principal for transfer information.
