Lizzie Nell Cundiff McClure Elementary

Friday, December 14, 2012

McClure Elementary School founded in 2010 was named in honor of Lizzie Nell Cundiff McClure who was raised in Allen but graduated from McKinney High School in 1919.  After returning from the University of Texas at Austin as a Master’s prepared teacher, McKinney’s high school was fortunate to have Mrs. Lizzie Nell McClure serve as a social studies teacher, Department Head for many years and serve as sponsor to the American Traveler’s Club.  Mrs. Lizzie Nell McClure always took personal interest in her students, listened to their concerns, and helped them make better decisions about their lives and their futures. Here at McClure Elementary School, we carry on that legacy set years ago.  Daily, the teachers, engage each student in purposeful and challenging learning experiences and provide opportunities for meaningful relationships and connections to impact our community all while ensuring a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment.

McClure serves all elementary grade levels from kindergarten through fifth grade.  We currently house approximately 400 students on a daily basis with room to grow in the years to come.  With children, education, and excellence as our focus, we seek to empower all students to dream, discover, and develop their potential as lifelong learners and leaders.  We use purposeful experiences and community partnerships that engage the heart, head, and hands and in doing so we have succeeded in showing the students that one person can make an enormous impact in the school and in the community.

During our inaugural year, our Parent Teacher Organization sponsored a walk-a-thon raising money for students in our district needing shoes for the start of school.  We went a step further including the entire McClure family by filling backpacks with items for thelocal identified homeless high school students, and at Christmastime provided toys for our sister campus,Lawson Early Childhood Center.  Our student council joined with other district schools to sponsor acanned food drive for the McKinney Food Pantry, and later in the year, sponsored a program providing funds and needed supplies for the McKinney SPCA. As part of our commitment to Rachel’s Challenge and a tribute to Mrs. Lizzie Nell McClure, our Kindness and Compassion Club was established.  This young group of students partnered along with other McKinney schools, and a local McKinney business, to fill a district fund used to help McKinney families in need.  This amazingly empowered group of students uses their talents and abilities, by engaging their heart, head, and hands, all while showing that one small act of kindness can make such a difference.  Here at McClure we strive to provide an extra-curricular outlet for each of our students.  In addition to the Kindness and Compassion Club, the Student Council, and Parent Teacher Organization, we also have Choir, Safety Patrol, and our Broadcast & Technology Team.

We will embark on the years to come with great pride and excitement while continuing to take academic learning from the classroom to the community and showing our students that the heart of the school can make a difference in the world in which we live.
